Top Gun Rock the Diamond Game 1: N. Wake Tsunami 13, WR 11U Blue 12

Saturday's first game was scheduled for an 8:30 start. Here are the highlights of everything that happened from 8:30 to 9:30:

I think my favorite part of that first hour was when the guy from the Factory got all snippy with Coach Kevin and said, "I'll take that rake, so maybe it can dry out instead of you guys walking all over it." YEAH REALLY COACH KEVIN CAN'T YOU SEE THEY ARE MAKING GREAT PROGRESS?

Once Coach Kevin got out of the way and allowed the master groundskeepers to work, the game was able to begin. The Tsunami--a very strong team coming off a 7-0 trip to the Ripken Experience--built a 10-1 lead before 11U Blue woke up. The West Raleigh offense closed it to a one-run game twice before the time limit expired at the end of the fifth. Keeping in mind the goal of this particular tournament is to get better against the best possible competition before regionals begin on Wednesday morning, it wasn't an altogether terrible start to the event.

Banks finished it up in the fifth.

Dugout wisdom
Because it was a close game, there wasn't as much time for insightful dugout commentary. That being said, on the way to the Factory on Saturday morning, Asher said, "Maybe we'll see Justin Beaver!" Seriously, how do they remember this stuff?

I did enjoy it when Colin said, "There's always that one kid in class who reads 'tsunami' as 'tuh-soo-nami.'" You could tell it really bothered Colin. Don't be that kid, folks.
